About PRP Therapy for Pain
Our skilled primary care and family medicine physician, Dr. Arthur Schlyer, can harness the restorative power of your platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for healing. Using your blood, Dr. Schlyer separates the nutrient-rich plasma (PRP) and injects it into your joints. These healthy growth factors can help you recover more quickly after joint replacement surgery or an injury. It may also help patients who suffer from chronic or acute pain associated with the joints. When injected directly into your joints, PRP can improve your body’s ability to heal, reduce inflammation, and improve your quality of life. We encourage you to schedule an appointment at Renuvia Medical Center in New Port Richey, FL to learn more about PRP and how it can help with recovery or pain management.

Ideal Candidates
If you suffer from chronic pain that hinders your ability to perform your daily routine, PRP treatments can greatly help you manage pain. For patients who have just started researching pain management options, tried other conservative methods, or want to supplement their current routine, PRP injections might be the solution.
During your consultation, Dr. Schlyer can help determine if PRP joint injection therapy will work for you. If you have any of the following situations, you may benefit from this treatment, including if you:
- Prefer an alternative to surgery or cannot undergo surgery
- Need to delay a joint replacement surgery
- Want to supplement your current pain management techniques
- Want to try other conservative methods because other treatments have not worked
- Hope to enhance the healing process after surgery
If any of these apply to you — or if you have other reasons! — PRP joint injection therapy can greatly improve your body’s ability to heal and manage joint pain.
Treatment Technique
After performing a thorough consultation, Dr. Schlyer will start by drawing about two ounces of blood from your arm. We'll place that blood into a centrifuge that separates the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from the rest of your blood. Once the PRP serum is ready, Dr. Schlyer will use a syringe to inject it into the joint that is causing you pain. Generally, this appointment takes around 45 – 90 minutes. To continue managing your pain, we can discuss when to schedule your follow-up treatments.
What to Expect
Following your appointment, you may experience mild bruising and sensitivity near the PRP injection site. We will provide detailed post-care instructions specific to your treatment. In most cases, we recommend using cold compresses 2 – 3 times a day for 20 minutes at a time, wearing a brace, and avoiding anti-inflammatory medication. For each patient, we will ensure you feel comfortable and will answer any questions you may have before releasing you after the treatment. Because PRP is made from your blood, you have a reduced chance of side effects.
